It is getting to the time of the year when getting out onto the porch or standing on the patio with your morning cup of coffee is tolerable or, for some, even enjoyable. The blooms are doing what they do best, surprising you by tentatively coming up out of the garden soil in areas you thought were flower free, and the birds are starting to sing a little louder. Spring and summer are on their way, and it is time to start enjoying being outside again.

If you have not touched your garden since winter, there is a good chance that it will need a little bit of TLC, so it is time to put on your boots and get ready to prepare your garden for spring.

1)   Get Rid of the Old and Monitor the New

The first step in preparing anything for a new season is to get rid of the stuff that is dead and gone. Broken plant pots, rotting trees, excess leaves and debris that have been preserved by the frost and are left over, and of course – weeds. Some weeds are fine to have in the garden and provide essential nutrients for wildlife. However, some can be invasive and take over the curated parts of your garden and fight it for nutrients.

Clear everything out that is rubbish, and create a compost heap if you can, and then start working on any of the weeds that have started coming through – getting them by the root!

2)   Landscaping

When you have sorted out everything, the next stage is to get things into shape so you can enjoy the space. If there is not much to do and you want things to stay the same, then it can be a ‘do it yourself’ job if you are capable. Or, if you are up for the challenge and have done your research, you can get yourself some professional supplies from landscaping suppliers to start your new project with everything you need.

However, if you want a lot of work done or a different design or garden renovation that is outside of your capabilities, it can be worth hiring a professional landscaper. This way, you know that the job will be completed to a high standard.

3)   Plant Your Summer Bulbs

You might be preparing your garden for spring, but summer will be here before you know it, and it is important you get ahead of the game if you want to make the most of it!
Pick out the summer bulbs that you want to see come to life when you are in your garden, and plant them according to the instructions.

As soon as everyone starts to get that rogue hot weather in spring, you will want to have a space in your garden to enjoy it. Now is the time to dust off and repair any garden furniture you have, or even upcycle them into something that looks brand new so you can enjoy spring when it really kicks in.
